It is always a pleasure to share about the happenings in REEDS especially with our unwavering proponents who enables our aspirations achievable. REEDS has just completed its 30 years of journey and I am proud to be part of REEDS which has truly found its place in meeting some of the challenges of our rural society. At REEDS we continue to stay inspired by our vision and the change we want to see - ‘an empowered rural India’.

The year 2018-19 has been very fulfilling many ways. Highlights include presenting the first of its kind international symposium: ‘ANCHORING INNOVATION IN HANDLOOM WEAVING IN INDIA’ for a dialogue on the best means to promote futures and livelihoods in handloom weaving; and piloting a role in another landmark global event - AI FOR A BETTER WORLD! that deliberated the emerging issues in applications of Artificial Intelligence and its societal impact. Another exceptional highlight that has marked the year, is REEDS making an imprint for having been a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the biggest ever cleanliness drive in the world. We take pride for having verified close to 11,000 Open Defecation Free villages spread across 6 states in the country under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the highest number ever carried by any organization.

It is our desire that the work we do empowers people in rural India to ‘do more’ to enhance their lives and livelihoods. We are grateful to the encouragement and all-round support that has been instrumental in our work towards realizing empowered India. At the time we are cherishing our achievements in Swachh Bharat, it is very saddening to learn about the untimely demise of Dr. Kodela Siva Prasad Rao, the first Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Dr. Rao was an inspiration and pronounced supporter of our efforts in Sanitation. More than anything else, his commitment towards the development of women self-help groups and championing the Swachh Bharat Mission in Andhra Pradesh will be remembered for a long time to come.

While we gratefully reminiscence the moments of working with him in piloting - ‘Wash Resource Centre’, the first-of-its-kind IT enabled replicable intervention model, to strengthen capacity building efforts under Swachh Bharat Mission at Sattenpalli, the assembly constituency he was representing which later became the first open defecation free Assembly Constituency in the entire country; and in SKILLS2015 International Conference - ‘Realizing and Sustaining a Clean India’ which he graciously inaugurated, we pay our tributes to the inspiring leader and visionary who changed the lives of many.
